Willing To Serve

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. - 1 Corinthians 12:4-5 (NIV)

Recently some long-standing members left our church, leaving several key volunteer positions empty. There have been notices in the weekly church bulletins, asking congregants to step up to help fill the vacancies. I felt a nudge to help, but my talents are lacking. I have no musical skills, very limited knowledge about operating audio-visual equipment, and the thought of standing up in front of our congregation to speak fills me with dread. I was feeling disappointed and inadequate, but I asked God to show me how I might be of service.

I remembered Paul’s words to the Corinthians: “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.” I felt that the verse spoke directly to me. If we were all given the same talents and abilities, our world would not function well. It is our differences that make things work.

When it comes to serving others, we can follow Jesus’ example. When he lovingly washed his disciples’ feet, that act took no special talent — just the desire to be of service. In God’s eyes, there is no job too small. All that’s required is a willingness to serve.

God did open an opportunity for me at our church, filling a void behind the scenes. Whenever we reach a roadblock, we need only to ask God for guidance to show us the way.

Todays Prayer: Dear Lord, help us remember to always seek your guidance when we face obstacles, knowing that your word leads the way. Amen.
